Pittaja-Kaphaja Abhishyanda: Ayurvedic Insight into Netrasrava (Ocular Discharge)

Pittaja-Kaphaja Abhishyanda: Ayurvedic Insight into Netrasrava (Ocular Discharge)

1. Modern Explanation:

Eye discharge (also called ocular discharge or rheum) is a common symptom in many eye conditions, especially infections or allergies. It may appear as:

  • Watery, mucoid, or purulent discharge

  • Often associated with redness, irritation, or itching

Causes include:

  • Conjunctivitis (viral/bacterial/allergic)

  • Blocked tear ducts

  • Blepharitis

  • Foreign body

2. Signs and Symptoms:

  • Sticky or watery eye discharge

  • Redness, burning, itching

  • Swollen eyelids

  • Crusting on lashes

  • Mild pain or irritation

3. Ayurvedic Correlation:

🟢 Most closely correlated with:

  • Abhishyanda (अभिष्यन्द) – the most common eye disease described in Ayurveda

  • Especially Pittaja and Kaphaja Abhishyanda when discharge is yellow or white

  • Netrasrava – general term for eye discharge

Abhishyanda is considered the root cause of most eye diseases when doshas invade the ocular channels and produce inflammation and discharge.

4. Doṣa–Duṣya–Samprāpti:

  • Doṣa: Predominantly Pitta, Kapha, or mixed

  • Duṣya: Rasa, Rakta

  • Samprāpti: Vitiated doṣas enter the netravaha srotas, producing inflammation → excessive tearing or discharge, pain, swelling

5. Śloka Reference:

Ashtanga Hridaya, Uttara Tantra 13/1–3:
"रसेक्ष्मणोः प्रमार्ज्याशु दोषाः संचिन्त्यते यदा।
स्रवद्रूक्षाभिष्यन्दोऽयं दोषैर्भवति संप्लुतः॥”

🔹 Abhishyanda occurs when vitiated doshas affect the eye, producing discharge, heaviness, burning, and other symptoms.

Suśruta Uttara Tantra 5/1–2:
"कफजे स्रवति शुक्लं, पित्ते पीतं..."

🔹 Kapha causes white thick discharge; Pitta causes yellow, burning discharge.

6. Ayurvedic Management:

🔴 Note: In case of bacterial discharge with pus or pain, modern antibiotics may be co-administered. Ayurveda is excellent for managing chronic discharge and dosha balance.
