(Poem on Vachā – Acorus calamus)

वचा तीक्ष्णोष्णगुणा कटुका कफवातनुत्।
दीपन्यग्निविवृद्धिघ्नी मेध्योष्णा बुद्धिदायिनी॥
ग्रहणीदोषहन्त्री च कासश्वासविनाशिनी।
आमपाचकरी हृष्टा हिक्काशूलविनाशिनी॥
कृमिघ्नी च सदा सेव्याः स्निग्धोष्णा रुचिप्रदा।
स्तम्भकं शोथहन्त्री च बल्योष्णा विबुद्धिदा॥
व्रणशोधनकुशलाः कण्ठ्योष्णा स्वरकारिणी।
नमस्ते वचके देवी जडता-घ्नि सदा शुभे॥

कटुका कफ-वात-नुत् – pungent in taste, pacifies kapha and vāta -
दीपनी अग्नि-विवृद्धिघ्नी – stimulates digestion and enhances agni,
मेध्या उष्णा बुद्धि-दायिनी – hot, promotes intellect and wisdom -
ग्रहणी-दोष-हन्त्री च – cures grahaṇī (malabsorption disorders),
कास-श्वास-विनाशिनी – removes cough and breathlessness -
आम-पाचकरी हृष्टा – digests metabolic toxins (āma), energizing,
हिक्का-शूल-विनाशिनी – relieves hiccups and abdominal colic -
कृमिघ्नी च सदा सेव्याः – destroys worms and is fit for daily use,
स्निग्ध उष्णा रुचि-प्रदा – slightly oily, hot, and taste-enhancing -
स्तम्भकं शोथ-हन्त्री च – cures stiffness and reduces swelling,
बल्या उष्णा विबुद्धि-दा – strengthening, heating, gives awakening -
व्रण-शोधन-कुशलाः – skilled in cleaning wounds,
कण्ठ्य उष्णा स्वर-कारिणी – improves throat health and voice clarity -
नमस्ते वचके देवी – O Vachā, divine herb, salutations to you,
जडता-घ्नि सदा शुभे – remover of dullness, ever-auspicious
📖 Full English Sentence Translation:
Vachā is sharp, heating, and pungent in taste. It pacifies kapha and vāta doṣas, stimulates digestive fire, and enhances mental clarity and intellect. It is beneficial in curing grahaṇī (malabsorption), cough, asthma, and breathlessness. Vachā digests toxins (āma), energizes the body, and relieves hiccups and abdominal pain. It is an anthelmintic and suitable for regular use. Slightly unctuous and hot, it improves appetite and taste. It reduces stiffness and swelling while strengthening the body and awakening the mind. It is excellent for wound cleansing, supports voice and throat clarity. O divine Vachā, salutations to you — the remover of dullness and bringer of auspiciousness!
