AYURVEDIC MANAGEMENT OF AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER (ASD)

AYURVEDIC MANAGEMENT OF AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER (ASD)

🔍 INTRODUCTION

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition marked by challenges in social interaction, communication, and restricted/repetitive behaviors. Though not described explicitly in the classical Ayurvedic texts, its features closely resemble a combination of Unmada, Bala Unmada, Apasmara, and Manasika Roga. Ayurveda provides a holistic framework by understanding it as an imbalance in Vāta Dosha, Manovaha Srotas Dushti, Guna vitiation (Rajas & Tamas), and Ojas kshaya.

💡 AYURVEDIC UNDERSTANDING OF ASD

✅ Possible Ayurvedic Correlates:

Ayurvedic Condition Similar Features in ASD
Bāla Unmāda Abnormal behaviors, delayed speech, social withdrawal
Apasmāra Repetitive behaviors, speech issues, attention deficit
Oja Kshaya Weak immunity, low vitality, poor communication
Manovaha Srotas Dushti Impaired cognition, perception, and response

🔮 DOṢIC INVOLVEMENT

  • Primary: Vāta (especially Prāṇa Vāta)

  • Secondary: Pitta and Kapha (variably involved)

  • Mental Guna: Rajas and Tamas vitiation

🌊 CONCLUSION

Ayurveda understands Autism as a multi-factorial Vata-dominant Manasika Vikara with contributions from Tamas, Ojas Kshaya, and Manovaha Srotas Dushti. Classical therapies aimed at Balancing Vāta, Rejuvenating Ojas, Calming Rajas-Tamas, and Stimulating Medha (intellect) can significantly improve the quality of life of children with ASD.

A multi-disciplinary, compassionate, and long-term Ayurvedic plan is the need of the hour.
