Siragranthi or Sirajagranthi

Siragranthi or Sirajagranthi (dilated, twisted veins due to VataPitta imbalance and obstruction in Rakta vaha srotas).


Ayurvedic Remedies

1. Internal Medicines

(Should be prescribed based on prakṛti, doṣa involvement, and stage of disease)

  • Kaishora Guggulu – Helps purify blood, reduce inflammation, and improve circulation.

  • Punarnavadi Kashayam – Reduces swelling and water retention.

  • Guggulu Tiktaka Ghrita – For Pitta–Rakta vitiation and inflammation.

  • Chandraprabha Vati – Improves microcirculation and relieves heaviness in the legs.

  • Sarivadyasava – Purifies blood and cools down inflammation in varicose veins.


2. External Treatments

  • Lepas (Herbal Pastes)

    • Manjishtha + Lodhra + Chandana powder mixed with rose water – apply over affected veins to reduce burning and pigmentation.

    • Nirgundi Patra Swaras (fresh leaf juice) – reduces pain and swelling.

  • Taila Abhyanga (Oil Massage) (light massage only)

    • Sahacharadi Taila or Kottamchukkadi Taila – improves blood flow and nourishes veins.

    • Massage should be upward, from feet toward heart, with gentle pressure.


3. Panchakarma Procedures

(Done under Ayurvedic physician supervision)

  • Raktamokshana (Jalaukavacharana – leech therapy) – especially useful when there is discoloration, burning, or congestion.

  • Virechana – for Pitta-Rakta imbalance.

  • Basti therapy – to pacify Vata and improve blood flow.


4. Dietary & Lifestyle Advice

  • Eat fiber-rich foods (green leafy vegetables, fruits) to prevent constipation, which worsens varicose veins.

  • Include garlic, ginger, turmeric – natural blood thinners and circulation boosters.

  • Avoid too much salt, deep-fried, or processed food.

  • Drink lukewarm water and avoid ice-cold drinks.

  • Avoid standing for long periods; elevate legs when resting.


5. Simple Home Remedies

  • Triphala powder (1 tsp with warm water at night) – improves digestion and reduces strain on veins.

  • Horse chestnut seed extract (Aesculus hippocastanum) – improves venous tone and reduces swelling (available in Ayurvedic formulations).

  • Cold–warm water alternation – pour warm water for 1 minute, then cold water for 20 seconds over the legs, repeat 3–4 times to stimulate circulation.


📜 Classical Reference:

Suśruta Saṃhitā, Chikitsā Sthāna 12/3 – Siragranthi occurs due to Vata pushing vitiated blood, causing dilation and knot-like swellings in veins. Management includes Raktamokshana, Snehana, Swedana, and use of Rakta-shodhaka drugs.
