Tharpana Procedure in Ayurveda

Tharpana is an Ayurvedic eye treatment under Netra Kriyakalpa (therapeutic ophthalmic procedures). It involves retaining medicated ghee over the eyes for a specific duration to nourish, strengthen, and rejuvenate the ocular structures.


Indications

Tharpana is beneficial for:

  • Dry eyes (Shushkakshipaka)
  • Computer Vision Syndrome
  • Eye strain and fatigue
  • Early-stage cataract
  • Refractive errors
  • Night blindness
  • Glaucoma (early stage)
  • Diabetic retinopathy
  • Optic nerve disorders

Contraindications

Avoid Tharpana in:

  • Acute conjunctivitis
  • Severe eye infections
  • Corneal ulcers
  • Recent eye surgery
  • Excessive Kapha conditions

Procedure

1. Poorva Karma (Pre-procedure)

  • Patient is assessed for Dosha imbalance and eye health.
  • A gentle face massage (Mukhabhyanga) and mild steam therapy (Swedana) may be done.
  • Freshly prepared medicated ghee (e.g., Triphala Ghrita, Jeevantyadi Ghrita) is selected based on the condition.

2. Pradhana Karma (Main procedure)

  • A dough ring (Masha Pinda) is prepared from black gram flour and placed around the eyes.
  • Warm medicated ghee is slowly poured into the well and retained for a specified duration (usually 5–30 minutes).
  • The patient keeps their eyes open and closed alternately during the process.

3. Paschat Karma (Post-procedure)

  • The ghee is carefully removed.
  • The eyes are cleaned with a cotton swab dipped in lukewarm water.
  • The patient is advised to rest in a dimly lit room and avoid exposure to bright light, dust, and wind.
  • Herbal eye drops or Rasayana herbs (Triphala Churna, Amalaki Rasayana) may be prescribed for continued benefits.

Duration & Frequency

  • Typically done for 5–7 consecutive days, depending on the condition.
  • Can be repeated periodically for eye health maintenance.
