This chapter focuses on specialized Ayurvedic therapies—namely Gandusha (mouth gargling), Mukhalepa (facial applications), and Murdha Taila (head oil treatments)—to maintain sensory health and treat specific imbalances.
Oral Therapies: Gandusha and Kavala
Gandusha and Kavala are foundational procedures for maintaining oral hygiene and treating local ailments. While both involve medicinal liquids, they differ in their execution:
• Gandusha (Full Volume Gargle): The mouth is filled to capacity with a medicinal liquid, which is held still without internal movement. It is categorized by its primary goal: Snigdha (lubricating), Shamana (palliative), Shodhana (purifying), or Ropana (healing).
• Kavala (Mouth Gargle): Liquid is taken into the mouth and swished or moved around for a designated time. This is particularly effective for diseases of the throat, head, eyes, and ears, as well as addressing conditions like anorexia or excess salivation.
Facial and Topical Treatments
Beyond oral care, the text details the application of medicated pastes known as Mukhalepa. These treatments are designed to balance the Doshas, treat toxic conditions, and improve complexion.
• Application Standards: The paste should be applied in varying thicknesses (ranging from 1/4 to 1/2 Angula).
• Therapeutic Precautions: Pastes should be applied warm for Vata and Kapha conditions and cold for Pitta imbalances. Crucially, the paste must be removed once it begins to dry to avoid harming skin texture.
• Benefits: Habitual use of these applications results in a clear, smooth, and vibrant complexion while enhancing the acuity of the senses.
Head and Ear Therapies (Murdha Taila and Karna Purana)
The health of the head is preserved through Murdha Taila, which is categorized into four levels of intensity: Shiro Abhyanga (massage), Shiro Pariseka (pouring), Shiro Pichu (oil-soaked cloth), and Shirobasti (oil retention).
• Shirobasti (The Most Intensive): This involves using a leather strap to create a reservoir on the head, which is filled with warm medicated oil. The duration of this treatment is measured in Matra Kala (the time taken to blink).
• Karna Purana: This involves filling the ears with medicated oil to alleviate pain and local disorders.
• Systemic Benefits: Regular oiling of the head prevents premature hair graying, hair loss, and scalp dryness, while simultaneously strengthening the voice, jaw, and sensory organs.
In summary, Gandusha and its related therapies represent a comprehensive approach to external health, utilizing specifically formulated liquids and oils to harmonize the body's internal systems, cleanse sensory pathways, and promote overall physical vitality.
