Oleation therapy, or Snehana, is a foundational preparatory procedure in Panchakarma that involves the consumption of medicated fats to lubricate the body and prepare it for purification. As detailed in Chapter 16 of the Astanga Hridaya Sutrasthana, this process softens the internal systems and facilitates the mobilization of toxins for effective elimination.
The Substances and Their Application
The substances used for oleation, known as Sneha Dravyas, possess specific qualities such as unctuousness, liquidity, and softness. Ghee (Sarpi) is considered the best among these due to its ability to balance Pitta and its inherent compatibility with the human body.
• Types of Oleation:
• Single Fats: Use of ghee, oil, muscle fat, or marrow individually.
• Mixtures: Yamaka (two fats), Trivrit (three fats), and Mahasneha (all four combined).
• Internal Administration: Fats can be consumed alone (Acchapeya), which is considered the most effective for quick results, or mixed with food (Sneha Vicharana).
Patient Suitability and Timing
Not everyone is a candidate for this therapy. It is highly recommended for those with chronic Vata disorders, the elderly, children, and those requiring purification therapies. Conversely, it is contraindicated for individuals with severe digestive issues, obesity, alcoholism, or those suffering from acute conditions like diarrhea and fever.
• Temporal Guidelines:
• Seasonal Logic: Oil is generally preferred during the early rainy season, while ghee is ideal during the autumn.
• Digestive Timing: The dosage—ranging from low (Heena) to high (Uttama)—is strictly determined by the patient’s digestive capacity.
• Daily Routine: Proper adherence to dietary and behavioral restrictions is crucial, such as consuming warm water, avoiding the suppression of natural urges, and maintaining a calm, sedentary environment during the treatment period.
Treatment Goals and Outcomes
The ultimate goal of Snehana is to ensure that the internal channels of the body are cleansed and the Doshas are effectively lubricated. Successful oleation is marked by improved digestion, soft and unformed stools, and a general feeling of bodily lightness. When performed correctly, it serves as a powerful tool to strengthen tissues, improve complexion, and promote long-term vitality, potentially leading to a healthier, longer life.
In summary, Snehavidhi provides a rigorous framework for using medicated fats to restore internal balance. By carefully selecting the type of fat, determining the appropriate dosage based on digestive strength, and following strict post-treatment protocols, practitioners can safely prepare the body for deeper purification and holistic health.
