Jathyādi Tailam (जत्यादि तैलम्)

Jathyādi Tailam (जत्यादि तैलम्) is a classical Ayurvedic medicated oil widely used for wound healing and skin diseases. It is mentioned in the Sahasrayoga (Tailaprakarana) and is very popular in Śalya Tantra and Śalya-Prasuti Tantra practice.


Ingredients (main ones, prepared in sesame oil base):

  • Jāti (Myristica fragrans / Nutmeg)

  • Nimba (Azadirachta indica / Neem)

  • Patola (Trichosanthes dioica)

  • Karanja (Pongamia pinnata)

  • Haridra (Curcuma longa / Turmeric)

  • Daruharidra (Berberis aristata)

  • Chandana (Santalum album / Sandalwood)

  • Lodhra (Symplocos racemosa)

  • Manjishta (Rubia cordifolia)

  • Tuttha (Copper sulphate)

  • Sarjarasa (Shala resin)
    – processed in Tila Taila (Sesame oil) with Go-dugdha (Cow’s milk) and Kwatha of above drugs.


Properties (Guṇa–Karma):

  • Ropana – wound healing

  • Shodhana – cleansing and disinfecting wounds

  • Krimighna – antimicrobial, antiseptic

  • Kandughna – relieves itching

  • Dāha-hara – relieves burning sensation

  • Tvachya – improves skin health


Indications (Uses):

  • Vrana (Chronic wounds, ulcers, non-healing wounds)

  • Dushta Vrana (infected ulcers, diabetic wounds, varicose ulcers)

  • Kushta (skin diseases like eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis)

  • Pāka (abscesses)

  • Vidradhi (carbuncles, boils)

  • Burn injuries (superficial and deep burns)

  • Piles wound care (post-surgical hemorrhoid wound healing)


Method of Use:

  • Externally applied on the affected part/wound after proper cleaning.

  • Used for dressing of wounds (Vrana Ropana).

  • In burns, it soothes and prevents scar formation.

  • Can be used along with Raktamokshana (leech therapy) in chronic skin disorders for faster healing.


Modern Perspective:

  • Has antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and wound healing properties.

  • The combination of neem, turmeric, manjishta, and copper sulphate ensures both infection control and tissue regeneration.

  • Studies have shown efficacy in burn wound healing and chronic ulcer management compared to modern antiseptic ointments.
