Ayurvedic Management of Grahaṇī (Chronic Malabsorption Syndrome / IBS-like Condition)

Ayurvedic Management of Grahaṇī (Chronic Malabsorption Syndrome / IBS-like Condition)

Grahaṇī is a Mahāroga of the gastrointestinal tract described in detail in Charaka Samhita, Ashtanga Hridaya, and other classical texts. It is primarily a disorder of Agni (digestive fire) and the Grahaṇī organ, which anatomically and functionally resembles the duodenum & small intestine. The modern parallel can be drawn with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), chronic diarrhea, malabsorption, celiac disease, etc.

🔬 1. Definition (निदानार्थ चिन्ता)

"Grahaṇī nāma pācanāśayaḥ"
Chakrapāṇi on Charaka Samhita, Chikitsā Sthāna 15/44

"Grahaṇī" refers to the organ that holds and digests food, i.e., the small intestine, closely connected with Agni (digestive fire).

⚙️ 2. Nidāna (Etiology – Causative Factors)

Improper Ahāra-Vihāra (Diet & Lifestyle) Psychological
Ajīrṇa (eating during indigestion) Chinta (worry), Bhaya (fear), Shoka (grief)
