Malayalam name : കഞ്ഞി കൊട്ടം, ചെറുമൻ കൊട്ടം, ചെറു പനച്ചി

Sanskrit name : विरला 

A dravya which is doing Ropana karma especially in the gastro intestinal system (Aasya and amashaya) and useful as a Visarpahara dravya

Habit : A climbing shrub or small tree

Useful part : Leaves, Stem bark 

Uses in Horthus : 

1. Leaves are boiled in water and the steam exposure to the oral cavity will reduce tooth ache. 
2. Gargling with the same water will remove the microbes in the oral cavity. 

Other references 

It is exclusively mentioned in the Keraleeya chikitsa grantha called Arogyakalpadruma. It is indicated in Jadara Vranam and the formultion is called Viralapatradi tailam. 
Another formulation is Japanaladhaadi kashayam.

One of the dravya which is useful in Marma chikitsa by folklore practitioners. 

Useful in Visarpa chikitsa in bala (Karappan) : External use as parisheka dravya. 

One of the ingredients in AGNILEPA and documented as Bandha. Other ingredients are Kshudra agnimandha, vana thulasi, nirgundi, pavetta, lashuna, lavanga, maricha, sharshapa, haridra. 

Researches 

1. Antimicrobial Properties of Bridelia Scandens against Oral Pathogens (2018): all tested organisms were sensitive to both water and alcoholic extract of leaves of Bridelia scandens at varying concentrations.( 200 mg/ml and 400 mg/ml ) with zone of inhibition ranging from 20 mm to 48 mm .Even the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration ( MIC ) was less than 100 mg/ml in most of the organism indicating that extract of leaves of Bridelia scandens is most effective against the oral pathogens.
